Experimenting With Different Liquids--How Are They Different?

We put 3 different liquids into different jars. One jar had oil, one jar had water and one jar had Karo Syrup.
We put a marble into each jar to see how the liquids are different and how they effect the way the marble moves inside the jar. It was very interesting for the children to observe how different each liquid was. Each child had a chance to hold each jar to see the difference for themselves. Then we wrote our observations on a chart in our science notebooks.

Liquids, Solids, Gases--Science Comes Alive!

We have been learning about Liquids, Solids and Gases-what are they, can they change and how they change.
Morah Kathy brought in a pot, a burner and a bag of ice. We discussed if the ice was a solid and what made it a solid. We discussed what the ice was before it was a solid and what will happen to it when it gets heated. We observed what happened to the ice.

.

The children observed as the liquid became a gas called steam and watched as the steam evaporated into the air.

How Cold Does it Have To Be For Bubbles to Freeze?

Brrrr! Its cold out here! Morah Kathy had heard that as the Polar Vortex descended upon us, and that someone had said that when you blow bubbles during the freezing weather, the bubbles will freeze and fall to the ground and crack. Since this is in keeping with out unit on Liquids, Solids and Gases, we bundled up and went outside to test our theory. Unfortunately it was the day after the Polar Vortex descended, so it was only 20 degrees and we observed that the bubbles did not freeze. We concluded that it needs to be colder outside for bubbles to freeze. Next time it is 4 degrees outside, watch out because here we come!

Emma, Celina, Or, Maya, Eliana and Rebecca are all bundled up watching to see if bubbles will freeze. They look a little disappointed that they did not freeze.

Abby looks up to see if the bubbles will freeze.

Or, Celina and everyone outside trying to catch bubbles!

Morah Rivkah (Dahan) braved the cold weather to come outside with us.

Creating Architecture During Recess!

During recess, the children usually like to play with blocks. They usually construct something that takes planning, forethought and skill. Here David S., Rebecca, Abby, Emma, Leon, Mickey, David A., David M., Kfir, Or, and David G. all participated and helped create this structure. It could be we have a number of budding architects in our midst!

Emma brought in her magnet blocks and during recess, the students created this building which looked very much like a castle. Eliana, Shoshana, Celina, Rachel, Emma, David M. and Naomi were very proud of their structure. More budding architects, we wonder?

Creating A Gas from a Solid

We have been learning about solids, liquids and gases in science. We have done a number of experiments. Ari brought in this experiment from home for all of us to try out. First we discussed what we thought would happen. Then  we observed as the Alka Seltzer tablet was put into water. One child noted that she was not surprised that gas bubbles were produced because it has the word "seltzer" in its name--very observant!

First we felt  and smelled the tablet. It smelled like vinegar!
Then we dropped it into a cup with water
We are watching as the solid dissolves into the liquid creating gas bubbles. Here Shoshana, Rebecca, Leon, Or, Eliana and Mickey are watching as their solids dissolve into the water.
Naomi and David A. are amazed at how the solid is dissolving into the water.
David M.s and Maya are watching intently.
Celina and David G. are waiting for their tablet to dissolve.

Dear Parents,

The children had a great time decorating their very own menorah using different colored beads!
The children are very excited about Chanukah and can't wait to light their Menorahs!

Happy Chanukah to you and your families:)

Happy Birthday Rachel!
